AI, and the Seduction of Reductionism

Part 1: Descartes in Bed—The Ordinary Birth of an Extraordinary Idea

It's the winter of 1619.  A young French man is in bed.  His name is Rene Descartes.   Descartes is about to have an encounter with a fly that in turn will lead to an insight that will change the history of Science and Mathematics.  It will also drive the assumptions that fire the world-changing power of AI in our world today. 


But, for now,  Descartes is just a soldier in the service of Duke Maximilian of Bavaria, part of the Catholic forces fighting in the Thirty Years' War. The world around him is chaotic, a swirl of religious conflict and political upheaval that stretches across Europe. And in the midst of this turmoil, Descartes finds himself not on the battlefield, but in bed in a small room.  


The room was likely sparse, with little more than a simple bed, perhaps a desk, and a window that let in the weak winter light. Outside, the world raged on, but inside, Descartes was left alone with his thoughts.  The simplicity of the room around him, the stillness, might have heightened his awareness of the smallest details—the texture of the walls, the sound of the wind outside, and the erratic buzzing of a fly.


That fly. In the quietude of his convalescence, it became a focus for his restless intellect. As he observed the fly darting from one spot to another, an idea began to take shape in his mind. What if, instead of seeing the fly's path as chaotic, he could describe it with precision? Observing the angle of the walls and the ceiling a way to describe the fly’s position started to come to him.   In fact, with a flash of insight he realized that he could indeed describe the fly's position on the ceiling using two numbers. These two measurements, now known as the x and y coordinates, allowed Descartes to reduce the fly's position at any moment to a set of mathematical relationships on a flat plane. This simple but powerful insight laid the foundation for what we now know as the Cartesian coordinate system or coordinate geometry. 


Part 2: The Seduction of Reductionism—From Coordinates to Codes

Descartes' coordinate system changed the way we think about space, allowing us to map objects with mathematical precision. But this breakthrough also empowered the seductive power of reductionism—the idea that complex phenomena can be best understood by breaking them down into simpler components. This approach, scientific reductionism, began to dominate scientific thought. Spurred on by Descartes, scientists increasingly began to see the world  as a machine governed by mathematical laws, and reality itself became something that could be fully captured by these representations.


This shift empowered science and technology, enabling us to predict planetary movements and map the human genome. But it also carried a hidden danger: mistaking the map for the territory. As we reduced the complexities of the world to models based on equations and numbers, we risked believing that these representations (the maps) were reality itself, losing sight of the richness and unpredictability that lie beyond them.


This mindset is especially evident in artificial intelligence (AI). At its core, AI is a deeply Cartesian project, seeking to reduce human cognition, perception, and emotion to algorithms and data points. While this approach has led to remarkable successes, it also carries the risk of mistaking the reduction of reality for reality itself.


Part 3: The Limits of Reductionism—AI, Maps, and Reality

The reductionist approach that Descartes pioneered was instrumental in powering the Enlightenment and fueling the Scientific Revolution, which gave us the modern world. This approach bequeathed to AI researchers the powerful tools of data processing, pattern recognition, and prediction—tools that are poised to transform society. There's no denying the power and impact of Cartesian reductionism, particularly in driving the predictive successes of fields like physics, biology, and chemistry.


However, this approach has its limits, especially when extended beyond domains where it works so effectively. AI systems excel in environments that can be neatly defined and quantified, where reduction to numbers provides clarity and control. But they falter when confronted with the messy realities of human experience—emotions, social interactions, and the dynamic, interconnected systems that are not easily captured by data.


AI researchers often argue that even deeply qualitative experiences, like empathy, can eventually be reduced to algorithms. The problem is that empathy, by its very nature, is not something that can be fully understood through a quantitative lens. While AI can model aspects of empathy using numbers and patterns, this reductionist approach strips away the rich, subjective experience that defines true empathy. It confuses the map—the mathematical model—with the territory—the lived human experiencek of empathising.


In trying to quantify empathy, AI systems may create models that appear objective, but in doing so, they often oversimplify and misrepresent the complexity of the actual experience. The result is a system that may reinforce biases, make flawed decisions, and fail to grasp the nuances that are essential to being human.


This tension between AI’s capabilities and its limitations highlights the dangers of over-reliance on reductionist models. As we increasingly turn to AI to map human experience, we risk losing sight of the very qualities that resist reduction to mere data points—the essence of what it means to be human. As Albert Einstein famously said, "Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts." This captures the intrinsic limitations of applying a purely quantitative approach to the richness of human experience.



Part 4: The Allure and the Danger of Mapping Human Experience

AI’s strength lies in its ability to reduce the complexities of human experience into data points that can be analysed and controlled. However, this approach falters when applied to inherently human territories like emotion, empathy, and context. AI systems can quantify external markers of emotion, such as facial expressions or tone of voice, but they reduce the complexity of emotions to measurable factors, missing the deeper, subjective experiences that drive them.


Empathy, for example, is not a process of calculation. It is an immediate, lived experience that involves intuition and emotional resonance—qualities that can be boiled down to data points, but not without distorting the nature of subjective experience. AI may identify variables that correlate with empathy, but it cannot fully understand or replicate the human experience of empathy. In this way, AI risks confusing the map it creates with the territory it seeks to represent.


Here, the wisdom of Aristotle provides a vital counterpoint: "It is the mark of an instructed mind to rest satisfied with that degree of precision which the nature of the subject admits, and not to seek exactness when only an approximation is possible." Aristotle’s insight reminds us that the methodologies suitable for the study of the natural world are often not be appropriate for understanding human emotions, behaviours, or ethics.


Part 5: The Overreach of Rationalism and the Future of AI

The Cartesian revolution led to a pervasive mindset in modern science and technology—the belief that everything can be quantified and mapped. While this mindset has succeeded in areas like physics and engineering, it manifestly struggles in some domains, particularly those involving human emotions, social dynamics, and ethics. Just because something can be mapped does not mean it should be.


AI’s power to quantify and model human experience must be tempered with an awareness of its limitations. As we apply AI to increasingly complex aspects of life, we risk oversimplifying the very elements of humanity that resist reductionist thinking. AI is often portrayed as a tool that will eventually master all aspects of human life, but this vision overlooks the reality that some experiences—particularly those related to consciousness, emotion, and ethics—may never be fully captured by data and algorithms.


The future of AI should recognise both its power and its limits. AI can solve certain problems, but it should not be seen as a panacea for all challenges. In areas where human experience is too complex and subjective, AI’s reductionist approach may do more harm than good.   As we continue to develop AI, we must remain mindful of the distinction between the map and the territory. AI provides powerful maps of reality, but these maps are not reality itself. By maintaining this awareness, we can ensure that AI remains a tool for enhancing our understanding of the world, rather than distorting it. In doing so, we preserve the richness and complexity of human life, even as we harness technology to navigate the challenges of the modern world.
